I call this a Corn Dog Grilled Cheese because well, I took a grilled cheese sandwich, added some hot dogs to it, dunked it in corn dog batter and deep fried it.
Why call it a Corn Dog Grilled Cheese and not a Grilled Cheese Corn Dog? Because to me something being called a corn dog signifies that it’s on a stick, which this sandwich wasn’t.
If you are looking for other unique corn dog recipes I have plenty of them including Pork Sirloin Corn Dogs, Chorizo Elote Corn Dogs, Mini Meatball Corn Dogs, Breakfast Burrito Corn Dogs and a ton more. Or just click here to see all the crazy corn dogs I’ve made over the years. If you’re not feeling very adventurous I’ve got a classic corn dog recipe as well.
I also have a bunch of recipes where I just took random items like jalapeño poppers and hard boiled eggs and dipped those in corn dog batter and deep fried them, and when thinking back on it now I did refer to the corn dog breaded jalapeño poppers as Jalapeño Popper Corn Dogs which sort of breaks my own “it has to be on a stick to be called a corn dog” rule, but I guess the jalapeño popper stem is almost like a little stick so maybe that one is in kind of a grey area….
Anyway, back to the Corn Dog Grilled Cheese! I started off by making a grilled cheese sandwich with a couple slices of Cheddar, a couple slices of mozzarella and two sliced hot dogs between the slices of cheese. I don’t normally add quite so much cheese when making a grilled cheese, but since the corn dog batter adds some thickness to the sandwich I wanted some extra cheese in there to even out the cheese to bread and breading ratio.
Once I had my sandwich I whipped up some corn dog batter, which is just yellow corn meal, flour, sugar, baking powder, an egg, a cup of milk and a little bit of salt and pepper. The exact measurements are below if you feel like making this sandwich or any other corn dog related food items.
After mixing my batter I poured some of it into a dish, set my sandwich on top of it and then poured the rest of the batter over the top of the sandwich until it was completely covered.
The toughest part of this whole thing was figuring out a way to transfer it to the deep fryer without too much of the batter dripping off. This is super easy with corn dogs since you can just grab the stick, dunk them in batter and drop them right in the fryer, but with this sandwich I picked it up with a spatula, quickly moved it over my deep fryer and slid it off the spatula and into the oil using a knife which actually worked pretty well!
I fried my sandwich for about three minutes flipping it over halfway through and once it was nice and golden brown I took it out, let it cool for a bit and sliced it in half.
The great thing about deep frying a grilled cheese sandwich is that no matter how gooey the cheese gets when you first make the sandwich it melts even more and looks even better after coming out of the deep fryer. Now I just need to figure out what to dip in corn dog batter and deep fry next!
