Beer Flavored Candy

Beer Flavored CandyI don’t get a ton of free stuff sent to me because of this blog, but this is definitely one of the more interesting things I’ve gotten in the mail. Beercandy Inc. has developed what they call “The first candy for beer lovers.” The candies are actually chocolate covered caramels made with real craft beer and they’re available in four different flavors

The first candy is a caramel that is flavored with an IPA and covered in white chocolate. The second caramel is flavored with a Belgium Raspberry Lambic and covered in dark chocolate. Also offered are a Boston style Lager caramel covered in milk chocolate and a Stout flavored caramel surrounded by dark chocolate.

My first thought when I saw this candy was that it seemed pretty gimmicky, but after tasting all the different flavors you can clearly tell that the makers of Beercandy spent a lot of time making sure each of the beers and the chocolates that they’re paired with compliment each other perfectly. My favorite was probably the stout caramel covered in dark chocolate, but they all tasted really good.

Wanna try Beercandy for yourself? Just head on over to Beercandy.com. A box of four chocolates will run you $7.25, while a box of 12 sells for $18.50.

Maple Syrup and Pancake Frozen Custard

Kopp's Frozen CustardI feel sorry for people who haven’t had the chance to experience real Midwestern frozen custard. I always though it was crazy when New Yorkers would talk about how New York style pizza just isn’t as good when you order it anywhere else, but that’s exactly the same way I feel about custard. I’m not going to get into a debate about who has the best frozen custard in Milwaukee because if you ask three different people you’ll probably receive three different answers, but each of those three people will also probably agree that Kopp’s is one of the best, and that’s where I got this maple syrup and pancake frozen custard.

I wasn’t sure quite what to expect when I saw it listed on their menu as one of the flavors of the day, but I’m glad I ordered a scoop. At first it just looked like they mixed chunks of pancakes with regular vanilla custard, but it turns out that they actually made a maple syrup flavored custard, so you could taste the syrup in every single bite. Out of all the custard flavors I’ve eaten at Kopp’s over the years this was easily one of my favorites.

I was there on my lunch break so I also ordered a cheeseburger and some onion rings to go with my custard and those were great as usual. I’ve been eating at Kopp’s since I was a little kid and the fact that their menu hasn’t changed much at all between then and now (aside from the two featured custard flavors that change each day) just proves that they’re definitely doing things right.

Elvis Cookies

Elvis CookiesDon’t you hate it when you think you have a great idea only to find out that tons of other people have already though of the exact same thing? That’s pretty much what happened to me with these cookies. You see, I volunteered to bake some cookies for an upcoming Cookies For Kids’ Cancer bake sale and instead of just taking the easy route and making chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies I wanted to come up with something that would encapsulate the ridiculousness that is DudeFoods and put it in cookie form. That’s when I decided to take Elvis’s classic peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich and make a cookie version of it.

As soon as I thought of the idea I headed to Google, and that’s when I discovered, much to my dismay, that there were already Elvis cookie recipes out there. I was curious to see what they’d taste like though, so I changed up one of the recipes I found and made them anyway. If you’re interested in making your own here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients:
6 strips bacon
1 egg
1/2 cup butter
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 1/2 cups peanut butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 bananas
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Start off by cooking the bacon in the oven. When it’s done just chop it up into small pieces, combine it into a bowl with everything else and mix it all up. All you need to do after that is put chunks of your cookie dough on a baking sheet and toss it into the oven for 15 minutes at 350°.

Since the cookies themselves weren’t a truly original idea I decided to do something with them that I didn’t see anywhere online, and that something was an Elvis sandwich with Elvis cookies as the bun! How can you top biting into peanut butter, bacon and banana cookies only to have your taste buds come in contact with even more peanut butter, bacon and banana in between the two cookies? Obviously this is a rhetorical question, because the clear answer is that you can’t top it!

If you’re from Milwaukee and too lazy to make your own Elvis cookies (or if you just want to support a great cause) and you’d like to purchase some I’ll be making a fresh batch for the Milwaukee Cookies For Kids’ Cancer bake sale that’s taking place from 1 – 4pm on Saturday, May 24th at the Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery. There’s also going to be a silent auction with tons of great items, so stop down, enjoy some cookies and a beer and bid on some items! You can get more details by clicking HERE.

Arby’s vs. Subway Chicken Salad Taste-Off

Arby's vs. Subway Chicken Salad Taste-OffI received an email from Arby’s about a week ago asking me to try their new Market Fresh Grilled Chicken and Pecan Salad Sandwich. They didn’t just want me to try their sandwich however, they also wanted me to try Subway’s Orchard Chicken Salad Sub and then write about which one I thought was better. Seeing as how I always hate to pass up a free meal I immediately replied and told them I’d be more than happy to write a review.

A few days later I received an Arby’s gift card and a Subway gift card in the mail and I got to thinking; how could I be impartial in a taste test like this when I knew who was sponsoring it? That’s when I decided to hit the streets of downtown Milwaukee to find someone to eat the sandwiches for me and pick a winner.

On my way downtown I stopped and picked up a Grilled Chicken and Pecan Salad Sandwich and a Grilled Chicken and Pecan Salad Wrap from Arby’s and a Footlong Orchard Chicken Salad Sub from Subway. Arriving downtown I stopped at Walgreens to buy some gum and that’s where I came across Johnny. He asked me for some change and I offered him the sandwiches instead.

Over the next fifteen minutes we shared a couple beers, talked about life and Johnny tried the sandwiches. The winner? Arby’s. His reason why their chicken salad is better than Subway’s? “It just is.” So there you have it, according to my completely un-official chicken salad taste-off Arby’s is better than Subway because well, “it just is.”

Wanna try the new Arby’s sandwich for yourself? If you head over to their Facebook Page you can get a coupon for a free Market Fresh Chicken Salad Sandwich with the purchase of a 22 oz. drink, which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. They’re also donating $1 to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign for every Chicken Salad Taste-Off vote on their Facebook page. As if all of that wasn’t already enough Arby’s was also nice enough to give me three $5  gift cards to give away to my readers, so if you want one just leave a comment on this post and you’ll be entered!

Update: Leave it to the lawyers to make everything a little less fun. The Arby’s legal team has asked me to blur the logo on the beer cans in my pictures below and to remove the reference in my blog post to what type of beer Johnny prefers. If you’re really wondering what beer it was though it rhymes with “Ratty Dice…”

The Dogg Haus

The Dog HausThe Dogg Haus is another one of those places that I’ve always wanted to stop and eat at, but for one reason or another never got the chance. When my buddy Kyle and I went to go see Maritime play a free show during Record Store Day recently though we had some time to kill, we were both hungry, and The Dogg Haus was right around the corner so I suggested that we stop in for some food.

The great thing about The Dogg Haus is that they have a ton of menu options. If you’re in a hurry they have 14 different specialty dogs to choose from that consist of a Vienna Beef hot dog in a bun with various toppings. If you feel like getting creative however you can also build your own dog and choose between nine different hot dog options and then top them with your choice of almost 30 different toppings. Not a meat eater? No problem, they also offer a Boca (veggie) hot dog.

We didn’t have much time to eat, so I decided to go with the Tex-Mex, which is one of their specialty dogs and comes covered in salsa, shredded cheese, sour cream and onions. The menu prices at The Dogg Haus are also extremely reasonable, with a majority of the specialty dogs only costing $2.49 and the rest of them coming in closer to the $3 mark. Granted, the regular Vienna Beef hot dogs used in the specialty dogs aren’t the biggest hot dogs in the world, but for $2.49 there’s no reason not to just buy a couple of them anyway. I definitely would have tried another one if we didn’t have to get to the Maritime show.
