What do you do when you love McDonald’s breakfast but you’re sick of all the McGriddles, Biscuits and McMuffins that they offer? You invent your own breakfast! I call this the McBenedict.
I took a Big Mac, fed the top bun to my dog Finn, added some Chicken McNuggets and fries and completed my masterpiece with a poached egg and some hollandaise sauce.
Generally when I make Eggs Benedict I top the poached egg and hollandaise sauce with either diced chives, a dash of paprika or both, but I didn’t have any chives on hand this time so paprika it was!
Obviously a breakfast this big and ridiculous would never make it to an actual McDonald’s menu, but it got me thinking about how awesome it would be if McDonald’s actually did add an Eggs Benedict McMuffin to their menu.
I mean, they’ve already got the English muffins and Canadian bacon right? All they’d need to do is combine those with one of their eggs and some hollandaise, add the second half of an English muffin and they’d be all set!
Although I guess it wouldn’t technically be Eggs Benedict if the egg wasn’t poached, but for a fast food breakfast sandwich I’d still be all about it!
In fact, I was so intrigued by this idea that I started doing a little research and apparently McDonald’s actually did consider adding hollandaise sauce, or something very similar to it to their McMuffins a long time ago. Unfortunately it never made it into any actual McDonald’s locations because the sauce made the sandwich too slippery to hold together and thus the idea was scrapped.
Although now that I think back to when I had a regular 9 – 5 office job and reminisce about all the times I scarfed down Egg McMuffins in my car on my drive to work I’m almost a little grateful that hollandaise sauce was never available as a topping because I know damn well it would have been way too messy and I would have shown up to work every day with sauce all over my shirt.
