The Bacon Weave Taco

The Bacon Weave TacoI know that tacos with shells made out of bacon have been done before, but none of the ones I've seen looked very appetizing to me. It seems like people sort of took the easy way out when making them and just tossed their bacon over a metal object, made sure the strips overlapped a little so they'd stick together and either baked or deep fried it like that so their shells just end up looking like squares of bacon that had been folded in half. Long story short, most of the bacon taco shells out there just don't look very taco-shaped.

For my bacon taco shell I started off the same way I did when I made my Bacon Weave Quesdailla, by creating a square bacon weave, cooking it in my oven at 350° for about 15 minutes and then placing an upside down bowl over it and tracing around it with a knife until I was left with a circular bacon weave. After that I hung it over a couple kabob sticks that were balanced across empty beer bottles and left it like that for a few minutes so it would keep its shape. I'm sure that there was probably something better I could have draped it over, but you've gotta make do with what you've got right?

Since I wasn't quite sure if beer bottles were safe to put in the oven I swapped them out for a couple pint glasses, put them on a baking sheet, hung my bacon weave taco shell between them and slid it back into my oven for another ten minutes so it could finish cooking.

Granted, I'm sure the beer bottles would have been fine, but I didn't know if the labels would burn or if the glue that holds them to the bottle is toxic. Then again, when you're eating stuff like this on a regular basis a little bit of toxic glue should probably be the least of your worries....

In the end my Bacon Weave Taco ended up looking - and tasting - way better than I ever could have imagined. Once it was done baking I filled it to the brim with seasoned ground beef, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese and took a bite. It was completely amazing, and aside from that the shell actually looked exactly like a real taco shell!

      1. Ummmmm, if you read the blog post I'm pretty sure that you'll notice that it explains exactly how to make a Bacon Weave Taco.

        1. Bacon Weave Taco Recipe

          Ingredients:
          Bacon

          Directions:
          1. Weave into a circle
          2. Fold into a taco

        2. Why didnt you just use a taco shell to get the shape right?

Maybe an ortega stand and stuff??

I would want the bacon weave ON the taco shepl!!

I get it if your going for a keto taco but cmon man!!

          1. I wanted the bacon weave to actually be the shell, not just be wrapped around the shell. I guess I could have used a taco shell to shape it and then just removed the taco shell, but then I would have had to go to the grocery store and buy a bunch of taco shells just to waste one.

    1. I am going to try this but do it on all the way on the stove. I'm going to use my cast iron skillet weave the bacon put it in the hot pan cook it on one side and tell you know that it will not unweave when flipped flip it over continue cooking for another minute or two on that side that's all the leave bacon takes a couple minutes put cheese on top scrambled egg turn it over like an omelet turn every once in awhile to cheese is melted bam Taco is done

  1. You are my hero! I suspect that you do not use a thick slice bacon. Hard to tell from the picture.

      1. Fantastic. . .are you a fan of Nueske's bacon? I've been trying differnt bacons and stumbled upon them a few years ago. . .Now, if I send a present that doesn't include bacon, I am burned in effigy. . . because NOTHING say's Merry Christmas, Happy Birth, Father's, Mother's, Armistance, Labor, Sun, Mon, Tues, Wednes, Thurs, Fri or Satur, Day like smoked pork products.

        1. I LOVE Nueske's bacon! It's probably my favorite bacon in the entire world, plus it's from right here in Wisconsin where I am!

          1. You're my hero... you've got all my favorites in there! I love tacos and I love B4C0N & CH33Z3... #thatswhatimtalkingabout

          1. why not hang the bacon over a taco shell with sliced cheese on it...kind of like the "crunch" taco they used to have at Taco Bell...hmmmm...

        1. How about if you cleaned your beer bottles? As a home brewer, removing labels from beer bottles is something I do regularally. Some beers are easier to remove than others. Most real German beers (HofBrau, Bitburger, Franziskaner, Weihenstephan, Erdinger, etc) - these labels are practically falling off when you buy them. A overnight soak in water with bleach should remove them. The dishwasher finishes the rest.

          1. Plus of course, you get to drink good German beer. 🙂 Of course you have Spotted Cow which will give German beer a run for its money. It is too bad I can't get any in Northern VA. 🙁

          2. The labels were on the beer bottles because I just drank those two beers as I was making my Bacon Weave Taco and I needed something to balance the kabob sticks across when I put it in the oven.

    1. Yeah, I uploaded it to imgur earlier today so I could share it on Reddit, but it's sort of a bummer that they linked to imgur instead of my actual blog on the tosh.0 website.

  2. Nick,

What is your favorite non-special order bacon, basically the over the counter type, find in the local Piggly-Wiggly bacon. (I don't have Piggly-Wiggly near me, nor have I probably ever been to one, but when discussing Bacon, I found it appropriate)

    1. I usually buy Nueske's, but I think maybe it's just so easy to find all over the place where I am because it's made in the same state I live in. Here in Milwaukee though you can find it at pretty much every grocery store.

      1. Well, lets just say LUCKY. . .I have to mail order my Nueske's. . not that it is a bad thing, I just have to plan ahead. I have found a local dairy (they still deliver milk to my house in glass bottles) that makes bacon, that is very good, not Nueske's, but still pretty tasty. Given options, Nueske's is my go to as well. Thanks!

        1. My father ordered a case of Nueske's after I introduced him to it. Six months later he called me to let me know how his latest physical went. He said his physician's main complaint was that he tested positive for Nueske's.

  3. You should probably put watermarks to copyright your photos... I've seen your bacon taco photo twice in my Facebook lineup now without any reference to where they got it!!

    1. Yeah, I hate to add watermarks because it totally takes away from the photos, but you're the fourth or fifth person to tell me that now about this taco. It just sucks that people will just take photos and re-post them without crediting the person they got them from.

    1. Seriously? Ugh.... The best was yesterday when some guy called me out saying I "stole" the photo because he'd seen it on Facebook, ha ha.

    1. Thanks! It's just a bummer that most of the people posting it don't mention where it came from or mention my blog at all.

      1. Hey, just wanted to drop a line that I saw it on facebook, but I googled how to make it and your site popped up the top list. Although it's not credited to you, it certainly will drive traffic to your site.

  4. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NONO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NONO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NONO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO...

  5. just how many slices of bacon does it take to make just 1 taco? looks like 10-12 slices. Looks pretty expensive and, not to mention, a clog up of your last good artery.. lol With all that said, Im DEFINITELY gonna make it.. lol

    1. I wasn't really counting, but I'd guess about 12. Since it was cut into a circle though the slices on the ends aren't full length slices, so it at least isn't quite as bad as just eating 12 slices of bacon on their own.

      1. I can easly knock out 12 slices of Applegates every Sunday morning. BTW, everyone thinks bacon is horrible for you. It really isn't. 12 slices is only about 400 calories and 12g saturated fat. Almost any resturant burger is much worse.

    2. Fats don't clog your arteries. Carbohydrates do. And you generally have to already be obese for that to happen. That's why people that eat ketogenic, low carb/high fat, diets lower their cholesterol so easily. The doctors were paid off to tell you these things.

  6. My mouth is watering. Genius. Clearly you are a taco master. Although your pic is on several sites, I was able to get to the source very directly.

Wish I could have a bite of that taco right now

  7. My friend text me the pic and I googled it and got ur blog! I appreciate ur dedication to Bacon. I'm all over it!

  8. And now it's made it to "What's Hot" in Google+ without any credit 🙁
Good thing the top two results in google for almost anything related to bacon and taco point in the right direction!

I do love how you made this post on the same day I made a bacon taco (not nearly as good as this, but it still worked)!

    1. Yeah, it's pretty much everywhere at this point, but you're totally right, at least Google searches are pointing people in the right direction.

  9. "I know that tacos with shells made out of bacon have been done before, but none of the ones I’ve seen looked very appetizing to me. It seems like people sort of took the easy way out when making them and just tossed their bacon over a metal object, made sure the strips overlapped a little so they’d stick together and either baked or deep fried it like that so their shells just end up looking like squares of bacon that had been folded in half. Long story short, most of the bacon taco shells out there just don’t look very taco-shaped."

Who cares what it looks like? Is it made out of bacon? Yes. Will it tast delicious? Yes. Will it make a turd? Yes. All you did was lessen the amount of bacon in the taco by cutting the corners off. That means you wasted bacon. FAIL.

    1. I didn't waste the bacon from the corners, I still ate it. It's not like I cut it off and just threw it in the trash.

I care what it looks like because in addition to tasting good, food should be visually appealing. If something doesn't look appealing do you really want to eat it? I don't.

The point was to make a delicious bacon shell taco that actually LOOKED like a taco, because the ones I've seen don't. It's like throwing a pile of meat and cheese on a plate and calling it a sandwich.

    2. C'mon Jake!

You went through the process of writing something to say that? lol, to me thats a complete FAIL. smh

  10. Had a comment about this and other bacon dishes you've mentioned... You're the Forest Gump of Bacon..... Yes, I'm a 90's child....

  11. Would like this anyways, don't have a penis! But, I'm not going to throw it up if I eat one, ... Great idea!!! I'm not super fat also cause I 'work out!' (LMFAO)

  12. Pls go vegan so I don't have to accidentally see this grotesquerie second hand on Fb. Thanx in advance from the innocent.

      1. Last time I checked, homo sapiens was STILL an omnivore, evolution has not devolved us into herbivores yet! BACON!!!

  13. Hi Nick, I have a friend who her and her hubby LOVE bacon and always share crazy yummy photos. I can't eat pork and since I'm in health/fitness - she shares with me so I can make healthier versions. I asked her where she got this and she said Pinterest and didn't know. I googled taco shells made out of bacon and found this very same picture - thus your site. I'll make sure I link your URL to her post. Hopefully others will do the same. Keep up the great job. Fun stuff - that I can work on a healthier version. 🙂 Warmest regards, Lisa

  14. for my 18 year old son who is 6'8" and about 295 lbs....this would be PERFECT. He thinks that salad is his food's food.....go figure!

  15. I am so going to try this tomorrow morning for Fathers Day. I am going to fill with eggs, peppers, onions and cheese! I hope it works, looks so good!

  16. I am glad I found your site. I believe as you do that visual appeal is part of the process. As to contents have you tried scrambled eggs and hashbrowns in it yet?

  17. Dear LORD! I suggest mass production of these bacon shells...SOON!! It feels like I just found Heaven! Thank you, God, for making pigs & for making people to make BACON SHELLS outta pigs!! Genius idea!

  18. Can you imagine? This is probably close to zero carbs, and guess what, I eat strictly low carbs, yes, this must be heaven!

  19. This is awesome. In the 90s, the Taco Bell by my house in VA did BLT soft tacos. It was a soft taco shell, crumbled bacon, lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing. I'm going to try this, but I'm going to make it a BLT Taco and only stuff it with lettuce and tomato. I'll add some ranch dressing for throwback tastebud purposes.

Thanks for the great taco post! I look forward to eating it!

  20. Thank you Nick!!! In my book you are a GENIUS!!! My Family LOVES BACON and Taco's. I am going to make this the next time we make taco's, I will surprise the family with them. I will make them for breakfast for sure, instead of the breakfast burrito's and fruit. I will do an omelet filled taco shell...now that sounds real good.
I reposted your bacon taco shell on my facebook page... I gave all the credit to you and your blog.
Thank you again for your creative idea. You truly are a Genius.

  21. If you drink good beer like Spotted Cow or Hofbrau, removing the labels is easy. Just put them in the dishwasher. It will take the labels right off. Also a good way to clean bottles if you are brewing your own beer.

  22. For some reason the word "Weave" in the name is cracking me up. But I'm from Wauwatosa originally so what do I know.

  23. OMG!
Must be sent from the sky above. This recipe is going to be my favorite. I mean, who doesn't love bacon and to add my all time meal, le mac n' cheese. I definitely have to try this out.
Question. How does it shell hold up while eating, will it crack and break apart and turn into like a taco/bacon salad?

  24. OK - I made these tonight. My daughter suggested using taco shells as molds - they worked beautifully! Thanks for the helpful hints!

  25. See its been awhile since this went up. didn't see anyone mention it, but an obvious breakfast taco if filled with eggs, cheese, onions, peppers, guac, even more bacon. Or a meat lovers and add some sausage, ham with the eggs.
