Heart Attack Grill

Heart Attack GrillWhen headed out to dinner in Las Vegas most people get excited about the numerous four and five-star restaurants run by world-famous chefs. Me? I freak out about places like Heart Attack Grill, which was the first dining stop I made on my recent trip to Sin City. After all, you can get a great steak or some delicious sushi at plenty of different restaurants in Vegas, but there’s only one place where you can enjoy French fries that are deep fried in pure lard.

The menu at Heart Attack Grill is simple; aside from the fries that I mentioned the only choices aside from chocolate and vanilla shakes (which are made with butterfat) are the burgers. Actually, it’s really only one burger that can either be ordered with one, two, three or four patties that weigh in at a half pound each. The names of these behemoths? The Single, Double, Triple, and Quadruple Bypass Burgers. Don’t expect to order a diet soda with your meal though because the only soda offered is full sugar Coca-Cola. If you’re feeling a little fancy however you’ll be happy to know that Heart Attack Grill even offers wine. The house brand? Fat Bastard.

In fact, the whole restaurant sticks with the hospital theme with customers being referred to as “patients” and the waitresses as “nurses.” As soon as you walk in you’re even fitted with a hospital gown before one of the nurses takes you to your table to take your order. Your food is then prepared by a cook dressed up in doctor scrubs, before your meal or “prescription” as they call it is brought to your table by one of the nurses on duty.

Although part of me kind of wanted to give the two pound, 8,000 calorie Quadruple Bypass Burger a shot I instead opted to take it easy and ordered the one pound, 4,000 calorie Double Bypass Burger as well as an order of Flatliner Fries, a can of Pabst and a shake. For an extra $1.84 you can also add ten slices of bacon to your burger, which I obviously did. I mean seriously, how can you pass up a deal like that!? The Butterfat Shake was by far the best shake I’ve ever had and I actually finished it so fast that I forgot to even take a picture of it. The burger and fries were right up there as well, and trust me, I eat a LOT of burgers…

In addition to the many world-class restaurants that Las Vegas has it’s also know as a place where if you look hard enough you can also find some amazing deals on food like 99 cent foot long hot dogs or $1.99 shrimp cocktails. Well, Heart Attack Grill has all those specials beat with one of their own, although it’s one that not everyone is able to take advantage of. If you happen to weigh more than 350 pounds however you can eat absolutely free at Heart Attack Grill. While I was there three different people actually took them up on the free food offer and were led to the middle of the restaurant where they were weighed on what can best be described as the same type of scale that you’d see near the shipping dock of a warehouse. Then, as each of them stepped on the scale and the giant digital readout on the wall surpasses the 350 pound mark the entire restaurant erupted in applause and the patrons were presented with their free burgers.

In keeping with their hospital theme Heart Attack Grill also offers free blood pressure screening and even a leader board where you can view the ten customers who have had the highest blood pressure. In case you were wondering, six of the top ten happen to be from Texas, with Austin resident Bart Rawlins sitting pretty at number one with a blood pressure of 246/163. Before I left a couple of the nurses were nice enough to check my blood pressure to see how I fared, but I’m sad to report that I was a whopping 34 points away from 10th place. Actually, that’s probably a good thing…

Looks crazy! Does that burger really contain 4000 calories?! Doesn’t look like it does

Yeah supposedly. The burgers are fried in pure lard too, so I’m sure that adds on quite a few calories.

Wow, I’ve been to Vegas several times and have never heard of this place before!! Do you have to wear the hospital gown?

While reading this piece, I reacted thusly:
    “Wow…”
    “WOW.”
    “WHAT?”
    “WHAT????”
    “OH. MY. GOD.”

I absolutely have to see this place in person, I can’t believe it exists!

They actually used to be located in Arizona and only moved to Vegas about a month ago.

You probably don’t HAVE to wear the hospital gown if you don’t want to, but everyone else does, so you’d actually look kind of out of place if you didn’t.

Really? Everybody wears it? No way. Well, I guess as they say, “when in rome….”

No wonder I haven’t heard of it before, the last time I was in Vegas was May, I think. Oh, I was wondering what kind of condiments come with your burger and fries. Is there mayo, ketchup, mustard available to add to your burger and fries? I actually like mayo & ketchup with my fries or sometimes ranch dressing.

Oh, this reminds me, I recently heard of something called a Butter Burger out in the midwest. I think it is a burger made with butter, cooked in butter, on a bun spread with butter. Something like that. It sounds freaking delicious. Would love to see a review by you on that kind of thing.

They had mayo and ketchup and I’m sure mustard as well, but I hate mustard so I wasn’t really paying attention to see If there was any.

I LOVE mixing mayo and ketchup! I call it “metchup” ha ha.

Butter burgers are super good! Basically they put butter on the grill and cook the burgers on top of it and then spread it on the buns as well and throw those on the grill for a little while before assembling the burgers. I’ll definitely write about one at some point!

Awesome! I look forward to an Butterburger piece! I tried to find recipes online because since I can’t find one out here, I would like to try making one. But recipes vary. Some people put a pat of butter *inside* the burger as well. It sounds like Culver’s is supposed to be the original? Anyway, I trust your taste and I would be so grateful if you would be able to figure out the best butter burger recipe or give pointers on what components make a great one. Most of my friends out here who have never been to the midwest are also in awe that there are such things as butterburgers in the world. We are all looking forward to learning more! Thanks!

This place in Milwaukee called Solly’s Grille was supposedly the first place that served butter burgers. I’m not sure if Culver’s was just the first to trademark the name “butter burger” or what, but Solly’s was around for about 50 years before the first Culver’s even opened. I think Culver’s just gets the credit since they’re a chain around here and Solly’s just has one location.

I’ve actually never made a butter burger myself at home though, so I’m not sure which recipe would really be the best or taste the best.

It just opened right at the end of October I think so it probably wasn’t open yet when you were there. It’s right on Fremont Street.

The best burger I’ve ever had. My son had to remind not to eat everything because I was looking forward to the paddling. The nurse did NOT disappoint.
