It’s no secret that chicken and waffles taste amazing together, but why should you have to deal with two foods sitting separately side by side when you can just combine them into one delicious handheld snack? That’s the exact question that led me to create these chicken and waffle wings.
The waffle breaded chicken wings were actually amazingly easy to make. I started off by cooking four “drumette” sections of chicken wings and whipping up some waffle batter. Once that was done I simply dunked the wings in the batter and placed them in my waffle iron with the ends of the wings (which I left unbattered so the wings would be easier to pick up and eat) sticking out. After that all you really need to do is drizzle some syrup over them and you’re all set!
If you try making these yourself the one thing you’ll need to be sure of is that you select wings that have a decent amount of meat on them. No one wants to take a bite only to get a mouthful of waffles and barely any chicken. The chicken wings I used were 1/4 of a pound each and I ended up with the perfect chicken to waffle ratio.
You know how back when I made the chocolate covered deep fried Triple Double Oreos I commented that they’d be the perfect food to be sold at state fairs all across the country? Forget about those for a second, because these chicken and waffle wings are what fair goers need to be eating this summer!

Over here in Amish country we make chicken and waffles a little differently. It’s more of a “chicken and gravy over waffles” kind of thing. Here’s a recipe;
My question is would it be possible to deep fry chicken and gravy balls in waffle batter?

I actually tried deep frying some chicken wings in a waffle batter, but it didn’t work out so well. I think it might have been because I didn’t let the chicken wings cool enough after cooking them though so I had hot chicken wings coated in a cool batter being dropped into hot oil. I might have to give it another shot with some chicken and gravy balls.

D) do you Americans call those chicken parts wings? Only they’re the legs of a chicken. The wings are much smaller. Over here we bizarrely call them drumsticks, but that seems less odd than calling them wings.

Thanks! What I used for these was actually the “drumette” portion of the wing. Chicken wings are made up of three portions, the “wingette,” the “drumette” (which look like small drumsticks) and then the wing tip, which is rarely used in wings since it’s so small and barely has any meat.
A lot of people here still refer to the drumette part of the wing as a drumstick, but for a lot of people the only real drumstick is the actual chicken leg itself.

Drumsticks are the leg of a chicken. These are the “drumette”.
If you were to compare it to a human arm, the “drumette” would be the portion from your shoulder to your elbow. The “wingette” would be from your elbow to your wrist. The “wing tip” would be your hand.

I wish it was intentional. I’m not sure where my brain was in this, but clearly absent. I now see what you mean by wings, in my head those waffles were massive chicken leg drumsticks, but everything makes much more sense now I’ve realised the scale of it all. I think I thought they were big chicken drumsticks because I was measuring them on the scale of food awesomeness; a scale they completely destroy.

I was truly inspired by your creation and used the inspiration for a great Super Bowl snack.

Those look awesome! I’ve been meaning to make some again and this time add a nice thick breading to the chicken wings and maybe add bacon or chocolate chips to the waffles, but I still haven’t gotten around to it.

I contemplated putting bacon in the batter — fruit could be interesting too. I wonder how the batter would stick to a breaded wing?

Thanks! I just used plain, unseasoned wings, and just used the drumette portions, so they’re small drumsticks.
Since I originally made them I’ve wanted to go back and make another version where there was more breading on the wings, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

i tried making these today but when i pressed them in the waffle maker it didnt cook on one side, so then i kept turning the chicken to cook all the sides but then looked like it was wrapped in waffle rather than what yours look like. They were delicious either way but do you have any tips?

I just tried to make them and I only have a Belgian waffle iron, and they failed horribly. The batter just drooped right off the legs and didn’t fully cook, either.
