Total Letdown: The Brewers Brat Dog

The Brewers Brat DogEvery time I write a blog post it’s either about a crazy creation I made at home or something delicious I ate at a restaurant. Well, today’s story is a little different. This one is about a meal that totally let me down.

A couple weeks back my wife and I went to a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game with our friends Tom and Stephanie. Once inside the stadium we headed to the Johnson Controls Stadium Club where I noticed that they’ve added some new items to their menu since last year. One of them — the Brewers Brat Dog — caught my eye.

The menu described it as a “bacon wrapped, hot dog stuffed bratwurst with grilled onion and Cheddar cheese served on a pretzel hoagie.” Actually, they described it a little differently, but that was due to the fact that whoever put the menu together apparently never learned how to spell the word “served.” The randomly capitalized words and haphazard use of the space bar was also a nice touch, but who cares about all that because I was getting a hot dog… wrapped in bacon… stuffed INSIDE a bratwurst!

About fifteen minutes after placing my order our waitress arrived with my Brewers Brat Dog. My first thought when looking at it was that they had to have mixed up my order and served me the wrong thing. The pretzel bun, hot dog, bacon, cheese and onions were all there, but the hot dog certainly wasn’t stuff inside a bratwurst.

I actually didn’t see any brat at all until I noticed that it was cut in half and placed underneath the hot dog. Since when does putting one thing on top of another thing count as stuffing it?  Also, check out how small the bratwurst is. Oh, you can barely see it in the photos? That’s because it’s the smallest brat in the entire world! I wasn’t even aware that they made them that tiny.

I know that food at sporting events is always priced a little high, but at $12 for a burnt hot dog, a miniscule amount of bacon, the tiniest brat of all time and some cheese that was obviously melted in a microwave it honestly doesn’t get any worse than this. What a rip off….

I am as disappointed as you. I detest awesome sounding food that ends up being mediocre.

I’m sorry you were let down at Miller Park. Don’t hold it against Milwaukee forever. TONS of “Dude Food” in Brew City. Come back and try again.

(Also, are your friends the Novaceks? Cause I know him, and that makes me feel like I know you!)

Oh yeah, I live in Milwaukee so I know that there’s plenty of good food here.

Yep, the Novaceks are who we were with! Small world!

Now is it even possible to stuff a sausage inside another sausage? Though I can imagine its something you will be trying at hoe now! TBH that hot dog looks quite tasty. I love the idea of the pretzel hoagie…
You should see the rubbish they serve at football matches (sorry, soccer to u guys) in London. I am talking random tasteless grey slime slapped between dry, cotton wool textured commodity bun, with nothing more than cheap ketchup to anoint the monstrosity! And, yep, you need to line up for a millenium to be served and remortgage your house to pay for it!

You have to try this at hurleys pub and grill inside lambeau field. It is absolutely phenomenal. Also a bit less expensive than miller park!

I plan to hopefully make it to at least one game this season so if I do that’ll be the first place I stop!

I too was so intrigued with the name and the description of this item while enjoying a pregame meal with three customers last night at the Johnson Controls Stadium Club. It sounded so good that we each ordered one along with a beer. I have to say, perhaps they made some adjustments to this item since your original post one year ago (to the day. how ironic). All four of us fell in love with the Brewers Brat Dog!

Of course, we realized that it was probably impossible to shove a bacon wrapped hot dog into a brat but the thought of bacon, hot dog and brat all together in one wonderous bun covered with cheddar cheese and onions was good enough for us.

It seemed to me that the cheese was melted, not microwaved and the bun was crisp and soft, as if it went through a quick broiler to melt the cheese. Over all, I am hoping that this incredible sandwich is available to the common folk who can’t get into the Stadium Club (which will be me for the rest of the season) because it’s too good to be kept from the general public.

Give it another try. They may have fixed it since last year.

Oh what a disappointment!!! Ken with all due respect, not sure what part was good, besides the concept… It was not moist and juicy and plumpy (is that a word). Bun was dry. No salt and pepper on the table, to help it out. Also, the big burger was cold and overcooked, what seems like velvet melted cheese on it. Sad representation for a Milwaukee.. We are known for our cheese and the quality our meat and the home of Bratwurst. It’s more sad that people who visit us experience such low quality food, we’re better than that. Johnson control should stick to what they do best and leave food business and food to quality to locals..
