Hi, I’m Nick. Have I mentioned yet how much I love eggs on burgers? I’m pretty sure I have. You know what makes burgers with eggs on them even better though? When they also have sausage gravy on them like the Brunch Burger at Palomino does.
Palomino serves up what is by far some of the best bar food in Milwaukee. I used to live right down the street, but even though I’ve since moved and now live about 20 minutes away I still try to stop in as often as I can. The bar offers great food all day and night, but Saturday or Sunday mornings for brunch are when you’re most likely to find me there.
Everything I’ve ever eaten at Palomino has been great, but my go-to brunch choice there is the Brunch Burger, which is a 1/3 pound burger topped with a fried egg, sausage gravy and for an extra $1 your choice of cheese. Each brunch sandwich also comes with one side and for my side I almost always choose the hushpuppies. The tater tots are a close second, but seriously, try Palomino’s hushpuppies. Trust me on this one.

You may or may not be aware that today is National Peanut Day, but in addition to that it also happens to be the birthday of Mr. Peanut, who is the lovable mascot for Planters Nuts.
To help celebrate, Planters was nice enough to give me a gift basket filled with various Planters peanut products, a t-shirt, a water bottle and other assorted Planters swag to give away to one lucky DudeFoods reader.
What to win? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post with the answer to the following question. Mr. Peanut is spending his year touring the U.S. in his new Nutmobile. What’s he calling his tour?
Need a hint? You can find the answer by going to Mr. Peanut’s Facebook page and clicking the “Planters Tour” tab. This Friday, September 16th I’ll pick one winner at random from all the correct entries to win the gift basket. Good luck!
Oh yeah, and here are some interesting peanut facts that I recently came across courtesy of the National Peanut Board:
- The average American consumes more than six pounds of peanuts and peanut butter products each year.
- It takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter.
- Adrian Finch of Australia holds the Guinness World Record for peanut throwing. He launched a peanut 111 feet and 10 inches in 1999 to claim the record.
- The average child will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before he/she graduates high school.
- Peanuts account for two-thirds of all snack nuts consumed in the USA.
- Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth.
- Peanuts contribute more than $4 billion to the USA economy each year.
Update: 9/17/2011 — Congratulations to Sarah S. who won the Planters gift basket!
Until recently when I heard the term “Mafia Wars” all that came to mind was the annoying Facebook game that everyone except for me seemed to play at one point. After trying the Mafia Wars Melt at Club Charlies however the same phrase now brings to mind a juicy 1/2 pound burger served on five grain bread and topped with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, grilled onions and green peppers.
Even though the menu at Club Charlies lists this burger at half a pound I’m pretty sure that it weighs much more than that. Either that, or every other place that says they serve half pound burgers is lying. Seriously, look at the pictures and look at how thick the burger patty is! It’s huge!
Not only does Club Charlies have giant delicious burgers, but for the low price of $4 you can wash down your food with a 24 ounce can of Pabst, which comes served in a paper bag.
On a somewhat related note, whenever I’ve seen homeless people drinking beer out of cans or bottles that they kept in paper bags I always assumed that they were trying to hide the fact that they were drinking in public. That always seemed goofy to me because obviously if you see someone drinking something that’s hidden in a paper bag you know that they’re drinking alcohol right?
After sitting on the patio at Club Charlies on a sunny afternoon eating my Mafia Wars Melt and drinking a Pabst that was served to me in a paper bag however I’m starting to think that homeless people don’t do this to try and hide their beers, but instead because it keeps your beer colder for much, much longer. I can’t be the only person who just realized this can I?

If the Hear-O-Israel sandwich sounds familiar to you it’s probably because you saw it on Man v. Food Nation’s Milwaukee episode when host Adam Richman stopped at Benji’s Deli to try it. It’s funny because I usually eat lunch at Benji’s once a month or so, but since they serve breakfast all day long and since I’m a huge proponent of eating breakfast for lunch and dinner I’ve never even glanced at the rest of their menu and in turn never noticed this amazing sandwich until I saw it on TV.
I stopped in this past week for lunch and in lieu of the omelette or pancakes that I usually get I instead opted for the Hear-O-Israel, and it was every bit as glorious as it appeared to be on TV. How can you go wrong with corned beef, pastrami, salami, pepper beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing all in one sandwich?
Benji’s Deli is one of those places that I hate blogging about. Not because they don’t have great food, or because I’m under the false impression that it’s some sort of Milwaukee secret and I don’t want word about it to get out (they’ve actually been open over 35 years and have always been crowded when I’ve stopped in), but because the food is so good that rather than having to worry about taking pictures of my plate for my blog while I’m eating I’d much rather chow down on their delicious food as fast as possible.

As if poutine (the popular Canadian dish that consists of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy) wasn’t already unhealthy enough I decided to take it one step further. How you ask? By deep frying it!
Since just tossing a pile of fries, cheese curds and gravy into my deep fryer wouldn’t do anything besides make a huge mess my first step was to find something that could hold it all together. After looking around the grocery store for a few minutes I came upon some egg roll wrappers and realized that they would work perfectly.
Once I was back at home I got to work filling a few of the wrappers with a layer of French fries, which I then topped with white Cheddar cheese curds before drizzling gravy over everything and rolling them up. I’d never made home made egg rolls before, so I really had no idea how much I could fill them up without having them fall apart when I dropped them in the deep fryer and I think I sort of under-filled them.
The deep fried poutine turned out really well and tasted great, but it was a little dry due to the lack of much filling. Now that I think about it though, I’m sure that dipping them in gravy before each bite could easily solve that problem. Either way, if I made it again I’d definitely try to pack some more fries, cheese curds and gravy into the egg roll wrappers. Your move Canada!
