Sprecher Beer Bread, Beer Chips and Beer Brittle

Sprecher Beer Bread, Beer Chips and Beer BrittleI went on a tour of Sprecher Brewery with some friends recently, and after it was over we sat down and drank the four beers each that are included in the $5 tour cost and then made our way into the gift shop. The gift shop at the brewery has pretty much anything Sprecher related that you could ever want from beer soap to Sprecher flavored BBQ sauce and everything in between. My three purchases that day (along with some beer of course) were beer bread mix, beer flavored kettle chips and a package of beer brittle.

The beer bread is so simple to make that even I couldn’t manage to screw it up. All do is combine the mix with 12 oz. of your favorite Sprecher beer, toss it in the oven and and hour later you’ll have yourself a delicious loaf of bread! The taste of the beer bread will obviously vary depending on what type of beer you add to the mix. When I made mine I decided to go with Sprecher’s Abbey Triple Belgian style ale, which gave my bread a nice fruity taste.

The Sprecher Beer Flavored Kettle Chips were pretty good, but if you buy them expecting a strong beer taste you might be a little disappointed since you can’t taste much beer in them at all. The chips are actually pretty similar to Krunchers when it comes to texture and taste. Don’t get me wrong though, they’re still pretty tasty.

The beer brittle was probably my favorite thing that I brought home from the brewery that day. It’s basically peanut brittle made with Sprecher’s Oktoberfest beer. Similar to the chips, the beer taste isn’t super strong, but you can definitely taste it.

The best thing about this blog post doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface as to just how many beer flavored items that Sprecher sells, so I’d say that there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll see a followup post in the future after I try out their beer popcorn, beer chocolates and the Sprecher flavored BBQ sauce that I mentioned earlier. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got quite a few bottle of Sprecher beer to drink!

S’mores Spaghetti

S'mores SpaghettiI’ve mentioned a few times now how until the end of the year I’m part of the Verizon Wireless Savvy Gourmets program, and in turn I was given some money, a Motorola Droid Xyboard and and six months of free, unlimited data service.

As part of the program they occasionally email me and the other bloggers involved with ideas that they think would be interesting for us to write about. The most recent email they sent us suggested that we blog about our favorite summer food or drink and try to make it as creative as possible.

One thing I absolutely love doing on a nice summer night is sitting around a fire with a few friends and making s’mores. S’mores have already been done plenty of times though. In the past I’ve even written about a few of my own different s’mores variations like Peeps s’mores, deep fried s’mores, s’mores made with Oreo cookies instead of graham crackers (which I like to call s’moreos) and even a s’mores quesadilla. This new s’mores creation however is by far my most original.

Lately I’ve been reading a ton about molecular gastronomy, which is the study of the chemical and physical processes that occur in cooking. The phrase is also often used to describe a style of cooking in which chefs make use of things like equipment that might be more tailored to what you’d find in a science lab, along with food grade chemicals, to re-imagine how food is prepared and served.

One of these chemicals is agar powder, which is derived from algae and can be used to turn liquids into gels. It’s also what I used to make this dish. The brown “noodles” you see in the picture are really strings of Hershey’s chocolate. The white ones? Marshmallow. Topping off the s’mores spaghetti? Crushed up graham crackers.

I made the chocolate noodles by boiling 3/4 of a cup of water and then mixing in two grams of agar powder. I then melted one and a half cups of Hershey’s chocolate and mixed it in with the agar solution along with 1/3 of a cup of chocolate milk to keep it from getting too thick. For the marshmallow noodles I followed the exact same recipe, but swapped out the chocolate milk for regular milk.

The noodles are then created by using a plastic syringe to inject the two separate mixtures into plastic tubing, which is then placed in ice water to allow the spaghetti to set. After a few minutes I took the plastic tubes out of the water and used the syringe to inject air into them thus pushing the noodles out the other end.

The great thing about agar powder is that it’s completely tasteless, so when biting into the noodles all you taste is chocolate and marshmallow. The cooking process however was a complete pain until I finally got the ingredient measurements exactly right. I actually ended up adding in the milk because the first time I tried making this the chocolate and marshmallow mixtures weren’t thin enough and ended up clogging the plastic tubing. Once the spaghetti was finally done though it was easily one of the coolest, and best tasting, desserts I’ve ever eaten. I’m not just saying that because I’m the one that made it either!

When it came time to write this blog post I did that right from my Xyboard as well with the free WordPress app. Oh yeah, and did I mention that I did all of this while sitting in my back yard drinking a beer and surfing the internet on Verizon’s lightning fast 4G LTE network? Man, this blog post is starting to sound like the Verizon PR department wrote it for me…. Anyway, I’ve got a few more crazy recipe ideas similar to this one that I plan to test out over the next few weeks so if you think this s’mores spaghetti is nuts you haven’t seen anything yet!

How to Get Free Whoppers and Original Chicken Sandwiches From Burger King

Take the survey - Get a free sandwichIf you’ve ever eaten at Burger King I’m sure that you’ve noticed the offer on the back of your receipt where in exchange for going online and taking a survey about your experience the restaurant gives you a free Whopper or Original Chicken Sandwich on your next visit. What I’m going to show you is how you can get the free sandwich without even taking the survey at all.

Alright, so the Whoppers and chicken sandwiches aren’t technically “free” since you still need to buy a small, medium or largre order of fries and a drink to get them, but “How to Get Free Whoppers and Original Chicken Sandwiches From Burger King Without Taking the Survey on the Back of Your Receipt” was just WAY too long of a title for a blog post. Plus, if you’re planning on buying a Whopper or an Original Chicken Sandwich anyway this deal makes them much cheaper than just purchasing either of them as part of a combo meal. Alright, on to the free sandwiches!

The way that Burger King’s survey works is that after completing it you’re given a code to write on the back of your receipt, which you then turn in for your free sandwich on your next visit. The code is always a combination of two letters followed by a random string of five numbers. The two letters are exactly the same for every single customer who takes the survey in a given month and the five numbers are always completely random. When you turn in your receipt for a free sandwich all the Burger King employees do is check to make sure that the first two letters match what Burger King tells them are the two correct letters for everyone who took the survey that month.

What’s even better is that although the letter codes vary from month to month they never change from year to year. What’s better than that is that I just happen to know the letter codes that Burger King uses for every single month. The codes are as follows:

January – BB
February – LS
March – JH
April – PL
May – BK
June – WH
July – FF
August – BF
September – CF
October – CK
November – CB
December – VM

Alright, so let’s say that during the month of August you eat at Burger King and save your receipt so you can complete the survey and get a free sandwich on your next visit. Your code would be BF followed by five random numbers, so BF92458 would work as would BF23514 or any other combination of BF followed by any five random numbers. Stopped in during the month of November? No problem, just use CB and any five numbers you want instead of BF. Pretty easy huh?

Bacon Weave Pizza

My bacon weave prior to cookingEver since I made my mac and cheese pie that had a crust made completely out of bacon I’ve been telling myself that I need to incorporate the bacon weave into another dish. Well, I finally did it with this pizza! Yep, I didn’t use a single ounce of dough for the crust in this pizza. What I did use however was an entire pound of delicious applewood-smoked bacon!

I started off by weaving my bacon together and cooking it in the oven at 400°. After ten minutes I took it out and topped it with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, green onions, Italian sausage and pepperoni before putting it back in the oven for another ten minutes to complete the cooking process.

Seriously, if you think bacon is good as a pizza topping then you need to try a pizza where the entire crust is made out of bacon. It’s unbelievable how amazing it tastes! Imagine a world where you could go to your favorite pizza place, order a pie and instead of having to choose between only thick and thin crust you’d have bacon crust as an option as well. Oh what a glorious world that would be!

Classic Slice Pizza

I’ve been a loyal Classic Slice customer ever since they opened the doors of their first location almost five and a half years ago. In that span I’ve tried every single type of pizza that they offer, but my go-to slice when I eat there continues to be their Popeye pizza, which consists of bacon, spinach, white sauce and ricotta cheese. Honestly though, every other slice I’ve ever had there has been great as well.

I’m not really sure why I’ve never written about Classic Slice until now, but the main reason probably has something to do with the fact that anytime I’m there I devour my gigantic slice of pizza in about two minutes, and until now I’ve never even paused long enough to snap a few pictures of my food.

A couple of my other Classic Slice favorites include the Meatalliza pizza (meatballs, sausage, pepperoni and bacon) and I’m Feta Up!!! (spinach, black olives, artichokes and feta cheese.) Not a meat eater? Classic Slice has you covered with one of their three vegan pizzas like their Anne Curry pizza (curry sauce, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, tofu and tomatoes.)

If you like pizza and live in Milwaukee I’m sure you’ve already eaten at Classic Slice, but on the off chance that you haven’t you owe it to yourself to stop in to either their original Bay View location or their new location on the east side that opened in January of 2011.
