The Brunch Burger

The Brunch Burger from PalominoHi, I’m Nick. Have I mentioned yet how much I love eggs on burgers? I’m pretty sure I have. You know what makes burgers with eggs on them even better though? When they also have sausage gravy on them like the Brunch Burger at Palomino does.

Palomino serves up what is by far some of the best bar food in Milwaukee. I used to live right down the street, but even though I’ve since moved and now live about 20 minutes away I still try to stop in as often as I can. The bar offers great food all day and night, but Saturday or Sunday mornings for brunch are when you’re most likely to find me there.

Everything I’ve ever eaten at Palomino has been great, but my go-to brunch choice there is the Brunch Burger, which is a 1/3 pound burger topped with a fried egg, sausage gravy and for an extra $1 your choice of cheese. Each brunch sandwich also comes with one side and for my side I almost always choose the hushpuppies. The tater tots are a close second, but seriously, try Palomino’s hushpuppies. Trust me on this one.

The Mafia Wars Melt

The Mafia Wars MeltUntil recently when I heard the term “Mafia Wars” all that came to mind was the annoying Facebook game that everyone except for me seemed to play at one point. After trying the Mafia Wars Melt at Club Charlies however the same phrase now brings to mind a juicy 1/2 pound burger served on five grain bread and topped with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, grilled onions and green peppers.

Even though the menu at Club Charlies lists this burger at half a pound I’m pretty sure that it weighs much more than that. Either that, or every other place that says they serve half pound burgers is lying. Seriously, look at the pictures and look at how thick the burger patty is! It’s huge!

Not only does Club Charlies have giant delicious burgers, but for the low price of $4 you can wash down your food with a 24 ounce can of Pabst, which comes served in a paper bag.

On a somewhat related note, whenever I’ve seen homeless people drinking beer out of cans or bottles that they kept in paper bags I always assumed that they were trying to hide the fact that they were drinking in public. That always seemed goofy to me because obviously if you see someone drinking something that’s hidden in a paper bag you know that they’re drinking alcohol right?

After sitting on the patio at Club Charlies on a sunny afternoon eating my Mafia Wars Melt and drinking a Pabst that was served to me in a paper bag however I’m starting to think that homeless people don’t do this to try and hide their beers, but instead because it keeps your beer colder for much, much longer. I can’t be the only person who just realized this can I?

The Hear-O-Israel Sandwich

The Hear-O-Israel SandwichIf the Hear-O-Israel sandwich sounds familiar to you it’s probably because you saw it on Man v. Food Nation’s Milwaukee episode when host Adam Richman stopped at Benji’s Deli to try it. It’s funny because I usually eat lunch at Benji’s once a month or so, but since they serve breakfast all day long and since I’m a huge proponent of eating breakfast for lunch and dinner I’ve never even glanced at the rest of their menu and in turn never noticed this amazing sandwich until I saw it on TV.

I stopped in this past week for lunch and in lieu of the omelette or pancakes that I usually get I instead opted for the Hear-O-Israel, and it was every bit as glorious as it appeared to be on TV. How can you go wrong with corned beef, pastrami, salami, pepper beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing all in one sandwich?

Benji’s Deli is one of those places that I hate blogging about. Not because they don’t have great food, or because I’m under the false impression that it’s some sort of Milwaukee secret and I don’t want word about it to get out (they’ve actually been open over 35 years and have always been crowded when I’ve stopped in), but because the food is so good that rather than having to worry about taking pictures of my plate for my blog while I’m eating I’d much rather chow down on their delicious food as fast as possible.

The Big O Burger

The Big O Burger from Oscar'sWriting a food blog I get tons of suggestions from people on new places to check out. I try to get to as many of them as possible, but after the fourth or fifth person told me about Oscar’s Pub & Grill (not to be confused with Oscar’s Frozen Custard which has some pretty good burgers of their own) I bumped it up to the top of my list and stopped in for lunch.

The menu at Oscar’s is fairly small, which should have made ordering easy, but since everything sounded so good I still had a pretty tough time deciding what to get. I finally settled on the Big O Burger; a half pound Black Angus burger topped with chipotle jack and smoked Gouda cheese, bacon, chorizo sausage, fried onions and jalapeños and served with a side of guacamole.

If you’re not a fan of greasy food you might want to shy away from this burger, because topping a burger with chorizo definitely ups the grease factor by quite a lot. I on the other hand love greasy food and completely devoured my burger, not to mention the delicious homemade fries that came with it. The only way the Big O Burger could have been any better was if they mixed some scrambled eggs in with the chorizo and threw those on top of it as well.

Chocolate Covered Fritos

Chocolate Covered FritosI picked up a bag of these chocolate covered Fritos from the Ultimate Confections booth at the Wisconsin State Fair, but due to the mass amounts of other food I was eating that same day I ended up just taking them home and kind of forgetting about them until earlier this week. I was pretty hungry when I arrived home from work Tuesday night though, so I tore into the bag to give them a try.

At first I was a little bummed that each Frito wasn’t completely covered in chocolate until I started eating them and realized that doing so would completely overpower the salty taste of the Fritos with the sweet taste of the chocolate. As they are though the chocolate covered Fritos are the perfect mix of sweet and salty. I’ve tried chocolate covered potato chips before and wasn’t a huge fan. With those the potato chips seemed to get sort of soggy as the chocolate started melting, but I’m happy to report that the chocolate covered Fritos had no problem at all maintaining their crunchiness!
