Burrito Bueno’s All You Can Eat Lunch Buffet

Burrito BuenoI was reminiscing recently about how much I used to love the all you can eat buffet at Chi Chi’s before they filed for bankruptcy and shuttered all of their U.S. locations when I decided to look online to see if any places in Milwaukee still offered a Mexican lunch buffet. As it turns out, there just happens to be a restaurant called Burrito Bueno located a mere four and a half  miles from my work where for $7.25 you can help yourself to as much Mexican food as your heart desires.

Burrito Bueno’s lunch buffet lasts until 3:00 each day, but since I don’t usually go to lunch until around 2:00 or so, I only caught the last 45 minutes of it, which translated into lots of food that had been sitting around in warming trays for a few hours. I wasn’t about to let coagulated nacho cheese and trays full of lukewarm Mexican fare stop me from stuffing myself full of food however, so I grabbed a seat and dug in!

For my first plate of food I decided to try one of their cheese enchiladas, along with something that they called a “flour tortiup” (which looked and tasted exactly like a chicken enchilada). Plate two consisted of a couple barbacoa shredded beef tacos that I assembled myself and topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream. For my third plate I decided to try a couple of their pre-made chicken burritos and a piece of fried pork. After that I grabbed a couple more chicken enchi…. I mean “flour tortiups.” For my fifth plate I tried one of their beef chimichangas and made another taco, but filled this one with spicy steak and gravy. At this point I was pretty full, but they had some chicken with green sauce that looked pretty good so I made myself one final taco using that and grabbed myself one more chimichanga.

The food at Burrito Bueno wasn’t the best Mexican food I’ve ever had, but again, it’s hard to tell if it just tasted that way because I caught the tail end of the lunch buffet. Either way though, $7.25 for a lunch buffet is a pretty decent deal, so I might need to stop in a little earlier some other time and see if the food is a little better.

The Apple Bacon Burger

The Apple Bacon BurgerI’ve been following and salivating for what seems like forever now as I’ve watched Motor Bar & Restaurant unveil their monthly specialty burgers. Every single one of them has looked completely delicious and every single month I tell myself that I need finally make it a point to stop in and eat there.

General laziness got the best of me however and after missing out on awesome creations like their Bloody Mary Burger (an Angus patty smothered in Bloody Mary sauce and topped with grilled beef sticks, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and provolone cheese), their B.L.T. Burger (a burger topped with a half pound of bacon, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and a ranch aioli) and their All-American Burger (a hand packed Angus burger smothered in Motor’s Roadhouse Chili and topped with American cheese, bacon and a giant onion ring) I finally stopped in to try their burger of the month for October.

This month Motor is featuring their Apple Bacon Burger, which consists of a half pound certified Angus beef patty topped with shredded lettuce, sliced onions, Swiss cheese, smoked bacon and apple slaw. It’s funny because I never eat coleslaw as a side dish, but for some reason when I order a burger or sandwich that’s topped with slaw (like the overstuffed sandwich I got from Lucky’s or like with this burger for instance) I absolutely love it. The apple slaw that Motor used on their Apple Bacon Burger was much better than your average coleslaw however, and was the perfect addition to this well-prepared burger.

In addition to my burger I also tried a side of their mac & cheese, which was great as well. For the amount they give you it was also quite the steal at $3.95. Between that and the burger and fries I ate I left lunch feeling more full than I have in a long time, and for me and how much I eat that’s saying a lot. If you want to try the Apple Bacon Burger for yourself you have 14 more days to stop in at Motor and order it, but if you miss it I’m sure that next month’s specialty burger will be just as good.

The Alligator Sandwich

The Alligator SandwichI spent a weekend in Wisconsin Dells recently for my buddy Allen’s bachelor party, and on our second day after a drunken round of miniature golf we headed to Marley’s for lunch. As you can probably tell from the name, Marley’s happens to be a Caribbean themed restaurant, serving jerk chicken and pork, seafood and an assortment of sandwiches among other things. One menu item immediately caught my eye though; the alligator sandwich.

The sandwich consists of breaded and deep fried alligator meat served with lettuce, tomatoes and onions on a hoagie bun. It also includes fries and a side of homemade ranch dressing. I’ve eaten alligator jerky before, but that’s the extent of my alligator consumption, so I was excited to try this sandwich and Marley’s definitely didn’t let me down. If you’ve never tried alligator meat before the best way to describe it (even though it sounds totally cliché) is that it tastes like a fishy version of chicken.

Also, feel free to make fun of me all you want for the drink with the umbrella in it, but these alcoholic concoctions that Marley’s refers to as the “Cool Breeze” (Rum, Blue Curacao and fruit juice) were buy one get one free the day we were there and they were damn good!

Pizza Hut’s $10 Any Size, Any Crust, Any Toppings Deal

Perhaps you’ve seen the commercials on TV advertising that for a limited time at Pizza Hut you can get a pizza of any size, with any type of crust covered in any toppings you want for $10. Now, I’ve seen some pretty good pizza deals before, but this seemed almost too good to be true, and I started wondering what would happen if I were to try and order a large pizza with every single topping that Pizza Hut offered. It’s been years since I’ve been to Pizza Hut and I wasn’t even sure where the closest location to my house was, so I headed to their website to find out and to place my carryout order.

The first thing I noticed on their website was that the offer didn’t include double toppings, extra cheese or stuffed crust pizza. Almost every deal has a couple stipulations though, and I didn’t really expect Pizza Hut to include double toppings or extra cheese as part of the deal anyway. Not including stuffed crust as an option was kind of a bummer though since it specifically says “any crust” right in big bold letters at the top of this deal, but I decided to soldier on anyway.

Once I picked a crust (I decided to go with “pan style”) I started adding toppings to my pizza. I started off with pepperoni, ham, pork, beef and Italian sausage, but when I tried adding bacon a message popped up stating “Caution: We do not recommend adding more toppings as our pizzas cook best with 5 or less toppings.” I clicked “OK,” but figured that the pop-up message was just a friendly suggestions since their website allowed me to keep adding more toppings after that. In addition to my original six toppings I added chicken, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives, diced tomatoes, jalapenos and pineapple and clicked the “Order This Pizza” button.

When I went to check out however a new message popped up, this time telling me “We’re sorry, there were too many additions/removals/substitutions of ingredients on your pizza. Please edit the pizza to reduce the list of modified ingredients.” It seemed as though my dreams of a $10 pizza with every single topping offered by Pizza Hut were smashed, but then I tried one more thing…

I started over and simply added a large supreme pizza to my order. After that I clicked the “Toppings” tab and added every additional topping that wasn’t already included on the pizza, plus some extra sauce. After that I clicked the “Order” button once again and voila, no error messages! I then completed the rest of the checkout process hassle free and 30 minutes later I was on my way to Pizza Hut to pick up my pizza!

On my way there I was pretty sure that one of two things would happen when I retrieved my pizza. The first was that I’d get there and they’d hand me a regular supreme pizza minus all the extra toppings I ordered. The second was that Pizza Hut would add all my additional toppings, but would totally skimp and only give me a couple pieces of each topping. When I got the pizza back out to my car and opened the box however my doubts were instantly erased. My pizza was completely PACKED with toppings!

You know the original error message I got saying how Pizza Hut’s pizzas cooked best with 5 or less toppings? This doesn’t seem to be the case at all because my pizza was delicious! In fact, there were so many toppings on it that with every bite I took I had tons of them falling off onto my plate. After eating three or four slices there were so many toppings on my plate that I could have easily covered a whole separate pizza with them.

So there you have it. Although you might not be able to get any crust you want as part of this deal if you use my little trick you can at least get Pizza Hut to honor the “any toppings” part of their promotion. You know, as long as you don’t want any double toppings or extra cheese…

Breakfast Pasta

Breakfast PastaYou can file this dish under “food ideas I wish I would have thought of.” I was brunching with my wife and a couple friends at The Knick recently and what did I come across on their menu? Breakfast pasta! That’s right, as part of their Sunday brunch menu the restaurant serves up fettuccine tossed with scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes and bacon and topped with Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs.

The only downfall of having pasta this early in the day is that it makes you pretty sluggish, especially when you pair it with multiple beers like I did. Aside from that though this was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a long time. In fact, there were a couple other brunch items on The Knick’s menu that I might need to stop back soon and try like their Crab Cake Benedict or the Andouille Sausage Omelette that they offer.

Now that I’ve eaten breakfast pasta I’m racking my brain trying to come up with other foods that could be turned into breakfast foods by adding eggs and bacon to them. I’ve already had plenty of different breakfast pizzas in my life, but what about breakfast nachos? You could just take some tortilla chips and cover them in scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, bacon and peppers and melt a bunch of cheese all over them. Breakfast lasagna? That might not be a bad idea either!
