Shenanigans at The Eatery on Farwell

The Eatery on FarewellMe, my wife and our friend Curt were headed out to brunch recently and were looking for someplace new to try so I suggested that we check out The Eatery on Farwell. I’d already been there during happy hour and enjoyed the few appetizers that I tried during that visit, so stopping in for brunch seemed like a safe bet.

Deciding what I wanted to eat was a pretty daunting task. The Eatery on Farwell easily has one of the biggest brunch menus in Milwaukee and I’m pretty terrible when it comes to making decisions, especially ones involving food because everything always sounds so good to me.

After ten minutes of still trying to figure out what I wanted I glanced up at the ceiling and noticed a chalk board with a bunch of names written on it under the heading “I finished the Shenanigans.”

The Shenanigans, which I hadn’t noticed on their brunch menu until that point, is a plate of food consisting of bacon, a bratwurst, a Polish sausage, pulled ham, American fries and Cheddar cheese curds topped with country gravy and two eggs. Oh yeah, and toast. As if that isn’t already enough food it also includes two slices of toast.

Usually when I can’t decide what to eat I just try to eat it all, which is sort of what you end up doing when you order this dish, so order the Shenanigans is exactly what I did!

It’s funny, when I was a kid I was the pickiest eater possible and I absolutely hated it when the different foods on my plate would even touch each other and now I’m eating stuff like this and loving every single bite of it.

After I finished my meal the waitress offered me a piece of chalk so I could add my name to the list of people who have finished the Shenanigans, but seeing as how I was already on my fourth drink I decided that standing on my chair while trying to write my name on the ceiling probably wasn’t the greatest idea.

Now I just need to stop back sometime and try the five or six other menu items that I also wanted to order. Seriously, the brunch menu at The Eatery on Farwell is gigantic. If you stop in and can’t find anything that you want to eat there’s clearly something wrong with you.

Oh yeah, and then I got a blueberry muffin to go and fed it to a dog that someone left outside on the patio. He finished it in about five seconds, so apparently they have some pretty good muffins as well. Either that or he was just really, really hungry.

Taco Bell’s New Cantina Bell Menu

Taco Bell's new Cantina Bell menuTaco Bell recently launched a line of “gourmet inspired” bowls and burritos. They call it their Cantina Bell menu, and although they don’t come out and say it directly, it’s pretty obvious that their new offerings are an attempt to take some business from chains like Qdoba and Chipotle who pride themselves on using only the freshest ingredients.

I’m always down to try anything new that Taco Bell is dishing up, so last week I stopped in to give the new food a taste. At $4.79 for a chicken or veggie burrito or bowl, or $4.99 if you prefer steak, their Cantina Bell items are a little bit cheaper than both Qdoba and Chipotle. After taking my first couple bites however I quickly discovered that you get what you pay for.

I wanted to get a good sampling of the new menu so I ordered a steak burrito, a chicken bowl and a side of chips and guacamole. I started off with the Cantina Bowl and right away something just didn’t taste quite right. The citrus-herb marinated chicken had a really weird consistency to it. It wasn’t even the least bit chewy. Granted, you don’t ever want your chicken to be too chewy, but this didn’t even really taste like chicken at all.

My Cantina Burrito wasn’t much better. I like the burritos from Qdoba and Chipotle because the individual flavors of all the ingredients actually stand out. With my burrito from Taco Bell everything just sort of seemed to taste the same after a little while.

The thing that Taco Bell doesn’t seem to understand is that people don’t want to go there to eat fresh, healthy food. People go to Taco Bell because they want taco shells made out of Doritos. They want to show up at 1am after drinking all night, spend $5 and go home with four Beefy 5-Layer Burritos. No one wants to go to Taco Bell and pay $15 for three Cantina Burritos regardless of how good they are or how much they taste like Qdoba or Chipotle.

The Cinnaburger

The CinnaburgerI usually only listen to the radio for about 30 minutes a day — 15 of them on my way to work in the morning, and the remainder during my drive home each night. More often than not my car stereo in the mornings is tuned to Kramp & Adler on FM 102.1.

One day a couple months ago they were talking about how great a burger with a Cinnabon as a bun would be. I don’t even remember the context of the rest of their conversation, or why they were even talking about it, but I remember thinking what an amazing idea it was.

I totally forgot about it until I was in the food court at the mall this past weekend and smelled the sweet, sweet aroma that comes from the small corner occupied by Cinnabon. I still hadn’t eaten yet and I was on my way out so I decided to grab a Cinnabon to go and make this dream a reality.

Once I was back at home I grilled myself a nice half pound burger and fried some bacon. You know, because this burger wasn’t already going to be unhealthy enough as it is…. All that was left to do after that was slice my Cinnabon in half and assemble my burger.

The one downfall, and trust me, there’s only one because my Cinnaburger was absolutely delicious, is that it was pretty impossible to eat thing thing like a normal burger. I ended up having to cut it with a knife and fork.

On the plus side, normally by the time I’m done taking pictures of the stuff that I make for my blog and I start eating it the food doesn’t taste quite as amazing as it should just because it’s been sitting around for ten or fifteen minutes. For every minute my Cinnaburger sat on my counter however the burger patty seemed to soak up more and more frosting, making each bite better than the last.

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go make an appointment with my doctor, because I’m pretty sure that my blood pressure shot up about 100 points immediately after finishing my meal.

AJ Bombers

AJ BombersI’m pretty sure that I’m the last person in Milwaukee to have finally eaten at AJ Bombers. I even have plenty of friends from out of town who have been there multiple times, yet my first visit wasn’t until a few weeks ago.

Why did I wait so long to finally stop in? There really isn’t one specific reason, but after seeing them mentioned non-stop on Twitter, hearing what seemed like everyone I know rave about them and watching them win the Milwaukee episode of Food Wars it seemed like there was so much hype surrounding the restaurant that I felt like no matter how good the food was it just wouldn’t live up to my expectations. It’s the same reason that to this day I’ve still never seen any of the Star Wars movies.

I finally stopped in with my buddy Allen on a Saturday night around 7pm and was sort of bummed to hear that there was a 45 minute wait for a table. We actually considered going somewhere else instead, but ended up scoring a couple seats at the bar after about five minutes or so. I’m definitely glad we decided to stay.

When it came time to order I decided to try the Barrie Burger, which is a 1/4 pound patty topped with bacon, American cheese and chunky peanut butter. I know that there are a lot of people who think that the peanut butter / bacon combination is crazy, but anyone who has ever had an Elvis sandwich should already know how perfectly these two foods go with one another.

I also ordered their Wisconsin Cheddar cheese curds, which were easily some of the best cheese curds I’ve ever had. How come no one ever told me how great their cheese curds are? It’s funny because they’re a lot lighter color-wise than most other cheese curds, so at first I just though they were undercooked, but that wasn’t the case at all. The chipotle ranch dipping sauce that came with them was a little too spicy for my liking, but when I swapped it our for some regular ranch dressing they were absolutely perfect.

Would I eat there again? Absolutely if the wait was short, but Milwaukee has way too many other awesome burger places to wait any longer than ten or fifteen minutes at any of them. Then again, I’m probably one of the most impatient people I know. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got six Star Wars movies to catch up on!

The Black Truffle Butter Burger

The Black Truffle Butter BurgerI’ve discovered some of my favorite burgers around the Milwaukee area by just randomly stopping to eat at interesting looking places as I’m driving by. The perfect example of this happened one day recently as I got lost while trying to find a place to buy some landscaping rock for my backyard.

As I drove around aimlessly I passed a small, unassuming bar / restaurant named B-1 Burger. I still hadn’t eaten so I decided to put my fieldstone search on hold for a little bit and stopped in for lunch.

While everything on the menu sounded delicious, nothing really stood out to me until I noticed the Black Truffle Butter Burger — a 1/3 pound ground beef patty topped with black truffle butter, apple-wood bacon, Gruyère cheese, sautéed mushrooms, onions, lettuce and tomato.

As I took my first bite of the burger I suddenly began to praise my terrible sense of direction, because without it I never would have ended up in the tiny village of Thiensville eating this mouthwatering burger. On top of that, the pile of onion strings I added for an extra $1.50 was almost another meal in itself.

Normally when I’m eating a meal that I plan on blogging about I’ll take a total of ten or so pictures just in case some of them don’t turn out. With this burger I took a total of two pictures before I started eating it and before it occurred to me to take any more all that was left in front of me was an empty basket. If that’s not an indication of how good the burgers at B-1 are I’m really not sure what is.
