Chocolate Covered Deep Fried Triple Double Oreos

Chocolate Covered Deep Fried Triple Double Oreos

In case you missed it Nabisco recently launched a new type of Oreo cookie which they’ve dubbed the Triple Double Oreo. Each of these delicious new treats combines three wafers with a layer of vanilla creme and a layer of chocolate creme. In a way they’re sort of like the Big Mac of cookies.

The Triple Double Oreos are pretty good on their own straight out of the package, but you can read all about them on plenty of other websites. With this blog post I wanted to give you guys something a little bit different by taking these new cookies to the next level.

Now, Oreos have been covered in chocolate and Oreos have been deep fried, but as far as I’m aware no one has done both, let alone done it to the new Triple Double Oreos. Plus, as you can probably tell by now I’ll use any excuse at all to try out my new deep fryer.

I started off by heating up some semi-sweet chocolate chips in a bowl in my microwave. Once all the chocolate chips were melted I started dipping the Oreo cookies one by one into the chocolate and laying them on a piece of wax paper, before chilling them in my refrigerator overnight.

The next day I pulled the chocolate covered Triple Double Oreos out of my fridge, dunked them in a nice batter that I whipped up and started tossing them in my deep fryer. They sort of puffed out into little balls as they were deep frying, so they ended up almost like doughnuts. The deep fryer also softened up the Oreo cookies and melted their chocolate covering a little bit, which made biting into them almost feel like I was eating a freshly baked cookie that just came straight out of the oven.

I’ll have to admit that prior to trying these I was a little worried that covering them in chocolate AND deep frying them might be overdoing it a little bit, but they turned out amazing. If I don’t see chocolate covered deep fried Triple Double Oreos being sold at state fairs all across the country next summer I’m seriously going to be disappointed.

How to Make a Grilled Cheese Sandwich in Your Toaster!

Make a grilled cheese sandwich in your toaster!Earlier this summer I held a contest here on DudeFoods where one lucky reader won a Versatility 6 Quart Slow Cooker courtesy of West Bend Housewares. They even gave me my own slow cooker so I could make the winning recipe. While I was emailing back and forth with West Bend regarding the contest I also mentioned how cool I though their QuikServ Toaster looked, and being the awesome company that they are they offered to send me one of those as well! On a related note, hey Nintendo, if you’re reading this I think the Nintendo 3DS looks pretty great! Anyway, back to the toaster…

You see, I have a weird obsession with buying kitchen appliances. As of right now my kitchen countertop contains a quesadilla maker, a sandwich maker, an omelette maker, a panini maker, a Ninja Blender and a Belgian waffle maker. As you can probably imagine, this makes for quite a cluttered countertop, which is why I love the West Bend QuikServ Toaster, because it sits flush against the wall and takes up far less room than my old toaster did. Another unique feature of this toaster is that instead of the bread popping back up when it’s done being toasted, it falls out the bottom into a drop-down serving tray.

One day recently I was all set to make a grilled cheese on my stove top the old-fashioned way when I thought to myself “What if I just buttered a couple slices of bread, threw some cheese in between them and sent the sandwich through my West Bend toaster?” This certainly seemed a lot easier and less troublesome than frying my sandwich in a pan on my stove, and on top of that I wouldn’t have to worry about flipping it since both sides would cook at the same time. I didn’t try using my toaster to make a grilled cheese that day, but the idea definitely stuck in the back of my head for a while.

I told a couple of my friends about my idea ahead of time and they all thought I was crazy, but you know what? I finally tried it and it worked, and a delicious grilled cheese sandwich with Cheddar and Swiss cheese was the result! I was a little worried about the cheese melting and dripping out from in between the bread, but as you can see from the pictures, there isn’t really anywhere for it to go with this toaster since the bottom is completely flat until the toaster is done toasting and the bottom opens up so your bread can slide into the drop-down serving tray. The only problem I came across was that I didn’t have the toaster set on a high enough setting at first, and I had to send the sandwich through twice, which burnt the edges a little bit. I’m pretty confident however that with some minor tweaking my West Bend QuikServ Toaster could turn into a full fledged grilled cheese making machine!

On a related note, West Bend is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, and they’re throwing quite the party. It’s taking place this Sunday, September 25th and is completely free and open to the public, so if you live in or near West Bend, Wisconsin you should definitely check it out. They’re hosting a free pancake and Klement’s Sausage brunch, selling West Bend items for up to 50% off regular retail prices and planning a slew of other activities. If you’d like more information on the anniversary celebration you can find it on their Facebook event page.

Deep Fried Poutine

Deep Fried PoutineAs if poutine (the popular Canadian dish that consists of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy) wasn’t already unhealthy enough I decided to take it one step further. How you ask? By deep frying it!

Since just tossing a pile of fries, cheese curds and gravy into my deep fryer wouldn’t do anything besides make a huge mess my first step was to find something that could hold it all together. After looking around the grocery store for a few minutes I came upon some egg roll wrappers and realized that they would work perfectly.

Once I was back at home I got to work filling a few of the wrappers with a layer of French fries, which I then topped with white Cheddar cheese curds before drizzling gravy over everything and rolling them up. I’d never made home made egg rolls before, so I really had no idea how much I could fill them up without having them fall apart when I dropped them in the deep fryer and I think I sort of under-filled them.

The deep fried poutine turned out really well and tasted great, but it was a little dry due to the lack of much filling. Now that I think about it though, I’m sure that dipping them in gravy before each bite could easily solve that problem. Either way, if I made it again I’d definitely try to pack some more fries, cheese curds and gravy into the egg roll wrappers. Your move Canada!

Beer Battered Deep Fried Lean Pockets

Beer Battered Deep Fried Lean PocketsGuys that are married or live with their girlfriends should be able to relate to me on this one. You know how sometimes when your significant other handles the grocery shopping she’ll end up spending $100 or $150 on food, yet there still seems to be nothing good to eat in the house? This happens to me on a regular basis, so I know it must also be happening to some of you as well. As a matter of fact, it just happened to me again this past week, but after digging through our cabinets, refrigerator and freezer for about five minutes I came upon some spinach, artichoke and chicken Lean Pockets that my wife bought for herself and decided to eat those.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Lean Pockets, but it seems like even if I eat the two of them that come together in a box I still end up hungry afterwards. This time I decided to try something a little different than just tossing them in the microwave for two minutes though — I decided to deep fry them! I started off by mixing up some of the same beer batter that I used with the deep fried fruits and vegetables. After that I plugged in my deep fryer, waited until the oil was boiling, coated the Lean Pockets in beer batter and tossed them in!

After cooking for about seven or eight minutes my Lean Pockets were a delicious looking golden brown so I took them out of the deep fryer, let them cool for a couple minutes and then started eating. The outer beer battered shell definitely added a nice amount of sustenance that these 250 calorie Lean Pockets just don’t otherwise have. As I finished eating them a strange feeling came over me that I almost never feel while eating Lean Pockets… a feeling of fullness. That’s right, I was actually full!

Deep Fried Fruits and Vegetables

Deep fried baby carrotsIt may come as a surprise to some of you that I don’t already own a deep fryer, but the truth is that up until a week ago I didn’t. You see, it was on that faithful day that I was walking through Target on my lunch break looking at kitchen appliances when I noticed that they had quite a few deep fryers on clearance for half price. Now I’m not a huge religious guy, but obviously this was some sort of sign from God and he was trying to tell me that I needed to buy one of them to better my blog, and who am I to argue, so I grabbed one and headed up to the checkout lane.

The toughest decision when owning a deep fryer is clearly what to deep fry first. Chicken nuggets? Nope, too easy. Oreo cookies? Already been done. Suddenly an idea came to me. What if I were to take a bunch of foods that were normally thought of as healthy and deep fry those? A few minutes later I was on my way to the grocery store’s produce section where I stocked up on baby carrots, bananas, Granny Smith apples, avocados and a watermelon.

When I arrived back at home I got to work slicing everything up and mixing together a batter to dip it all in. Just using a regular batter seemed kind of boring though, so I decided to coat all the fruits and vegetables with a beer batter instead. I figured that since I was already making them far less healthy than intended that throwing some beer into the mix as well certainly wouldn’t hurt things.

Out of all the fruits and vegetables I deep fried that first day the avocado slices were easily my favorite. You know what’s funny though? I expected everything else to taste completely disgusting and it all actually ended up tasting really good. The banana slices got a little soggy, but still tasted fine. Everything else stayed pretty much intact.

The only thing I didn’t really like were the watermelon chunks. There’s just something about biting into a nice cold slice of watermelon that deep frying can’t make any better. Everything else though? Totally better deep fried…
