The Honey BBQ Chicken Sandwich in a Can

The Honey BBQ Chicken Sandwich in a CanA little over a year ago I wrote about a company called Candwich that sells a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that comes in a can.

They claim that the sandwiches have a shelf life of a year, so I saved one and last month on the one year anniversary of my original blog post I poured myself a glass of milk, popped the top of the can and took a bite. Amazingly, it tasted exactly the same as the one I’d eaten 365 days prior.

Well, Candwich apparently saw my update and decided to send me a couple cans of their newest creation — a honey BBQ chicken sandwich.

Unlike the peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a can, which you have to assemble yourself, the BBQ chicken sandwich comes pre-made. In fact, the chicken is actually inside a pocket of bread.

Now, peanut butter and jelly are two things that I actually expect to last for a decent amount of time, but I’ve gotta admit, I was a little nervous about eating a BBQ chicken sandwich out of a can. In fact, I definitely paused for a few seconds and stared at it before taking my first bite.

Once I actually started eating it though I was pleasantly surprised with just how fresh the chicken actually tasted. For some reason I expected it to be really dry, but that wasn’t the case at all. The fact that there are about 100 ingredients that I’ve never even heard of listed on the can makes me a little nervous, but as long as you can get past that the sandwiches aren’t too bad at all.

If there ever really is some sort of zombie apocalypse do you know what I’ll be doing while everyone else is stocking up on things like rice and beans? I’ll be buying as many cans of honey BBQ chicken sandwiches as I can get my hands on!

Goodbye My Friend….

Goodbye old friend....It’s a sad day here at DudeFoods headquarters, aka my kitchen, as a dear friend is no longer with us.

Last Saturday morning as I opened my kitchen cabinet to grab a bowl for some cereal my 15″ Wedgewood graphite rectangular serving tray fell to its untimely death.

You might remember the tray from such classic DudeFoods posts as deep fried deviled eggs, the 25 cheese pizza and Elvis cookies. In fact, I’ve used it in a total of 13 different posts in the past year and a half. Yep, unlucky number 13….

I’ve already ordered a duplicate serving tray from Bed Bath & Beyond, but who knows if it’ll ever be able to replace the original. What if it just doesn’t photograph as well? I guess only time will tell.

Also, I’m pretty sure that my wife hasn’t noticed that I broke this plate yet, so if we could just keep it hush, hush until the new one arrives I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Selling Out: Part Two

A couple weeks ago I mentioned how Verizon Wireless hooked me up with some money, a Motorola Droid Xyboard and six months of free, unlimited data access. All I have to do in exchange? Share my experiences when it comes to using the tablet. In case you missed the original post you can read it by clicking here.

Anyway, back when I wrote that first post I still hadn’t used my tablet for much, but recently I discovered just how versatile it really is!

You see, I made myself a frozen Thai chicken pizza for dinner the other night, and after slicing it I realized that every single plate I owned was dirty. What was I supposed to do, just eat the pizza straight off of the circular cardboard disc that it came on like some kind of savage? No way!

That’s when I noticed my Motorola Droid Xyboard sitting on the kitchen counter next to me! Suddenly I had no need for a plate at all, as the Xyboard was the perfect substitute!

Plus, thanks to Verizon’s lightning fast 4G LTE service and the Netflix app that I installed I was even able to watch a streaming episode of Workaholics as I ate my dinner. Thanks Verizon!

Graze Restaurant

Graze RestaurantHow do you top a day of non-stop cheese eating followed by a fancy dinner at the Madison Club? You head to Graze the next morning for brunch!

Graze, which is located right on the Capital Square in Madison, Wisconsin, is pretty much the epitome of a locally sourced restaurant. In fact, if you flip over their menu you can actually see where they obtain all their ingredients, from their beef and chicken all the way down to their tomatoes, radishes and cilantro.

Whereas the food at our dinner the previous night was chosen for us, executive chef Tory Miller of Graze gave us free range of the menu, allowing us to order anything, and everything, that we wanted.

I started off with a drink called the Retox, and after tasting it I quickly learned that food isn’t the only thing they do well at Graze. The mixture of Brazilian rum, maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne was the perfect way to start my Saturday morning.

After drinks were ordered it was onto the food! I started off by sampling a couple beignets (which are French pastries topped with powdered sugar in case you’re not familiar with them), fried cheese curds and a board full of various, amazing Wisconsin cheeses. Can you tell how much we love cheese here in Wisconsin?

A while back I mentioned how the fried cheese curds from AJ Bombers were some of the best I’ve ever had, but I think the ones from Graze might be even better. Maybe it was the vodka batter that they use or maybe it’s because of how fresh the cheese was since it came from Sassy Cow Creamery, which is located a mere 22 miles away from the restaurant, but there was just something about them that I couldn’t get enough of.

Just when I thought my meal couldn’t possible get any better our waiter dropped of the croque madame that I ordered. The grilled sandwich consists of smoked ham and Pleasant Ridge Reserve cheese between two slices of brioche bread and is topped with a sunny side up egg. If I wouldn’t have paused to take a few pictures of it I’m pretty such that I could have finished my sandwich in about 20 seconds. It was THAT good.

30 minutes later we were back on our coach bus headed home to Milwaukee and I was fast asleep, exhausted from an amazing 36 hours of cheese eating, drinking, more cheese eating and even more drinking. Hey Wisconsin Milk marketing Board, when are you hosting your next blogger cheese tour and can I RSVP for it right now? Thanks!

Selling Out: Part One

I don’t make much money from the ads on this blog, which is totally fine with me — I write it because I have fun doing so. I like coming up with ridiculous food creations and I absolutely love hearing people’s reactions to them.

Where exactly am I going with this? I was recently approached by Verizon Wireless who offered me some money, a free Motorola Droid Xyboard (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it, because I hadn’t either until they handed it to me. As it turns out though it’s a pretty sweet Android tablet) and free, unlimited data service on their 4G LTE network until the end of the year in exchange for me talking about them on my blog. I accepted.

Does that make me a sellout? I’m not sure. What I do know though is that I’m now contractually obligated to mention Verizon twice a month here on DudeFoods for the next six months. Mention them how you ask? They weren’t very specific about it, which is sort of cool. Basically I’m just supposed to write about anything that I think might be “interesting” to you guys when it comes to how I’ve been using my tablet.

The only real steadfast rules about the program (which they call their Savvy Gourmets Program) are that I need to include that image that you see in the upper left-hand corner of this post and the disclosure language that you see in red down below every time I mention the program.

So far I’ve pretty much only used it to stream music off the internet while I’ve been in my back yard grilling, which isn’t exactly front page news, so I’ll probably have to get back to you with some stories that are a little more engaging than that. All I know right now is that I’ve got one blog post down and only eleven more to go!
